Volunteers are going door to door installing smoke alarms in neighborhoods. This is a part of the Red Cross’s efforts to keep Baton Rouge families safe.
“With the American Red Cross, we respond to disasters year-round,” said Micah Nicholas, Executive Director of the American Red Cross. “But many people are surprised to find out that the most frequent disasters that we respond to are home fires.”
For the American Red Cross, responding to house fires is an everyday mission, and events like “Sound the Alarm” are designed to prevent tragedy before it strikes.
“I came up on a home fire and to see how devastating it is on a family, I just knew I had to bring sound the alarm to LSU,” said Mihir Safaya, founder of the LSU Red Cross Club.
Each year, the campaign partners with community organizations to install smoke alarms across the Baton Rouge community, saving lives neighbor at a time.
“We do sound the alarm year-round with our community partners, and each year we’re really lucky to see a big impact,” said Safaya.
Beyond fire prevention, organizers said this event helps strengthen the community before a disaster happens.
“Getting a big community event like this together is important for neighbors to meet neighbors and to be able to help each other out even before a disaster takes place,” said Nicholas.
