“It was pretty traumatizing,” Chui said. “You’re just reacting to the moment, you can’t think straight.”
The violent robbery unfolded in front of their home in Bridgeport, near 26th Street and Emerald Avenue, around 3:16 p.m. Chui had just picked his daughter up from school.
Video shows a second man rushing in to steal Chui’s belongings while a third suspect jumped into his vehicle. Police say at least two of the robbers fled in the stolen car.
CPD later located the vehicle in the 300 block of South Maplewood Avenue in the Lawndale neighborhood.
Throughout the ordeal, Chui’s daughter, still clutching a treat bag from school, froze in shock.
“She was actually crying during the event. I couldn’t really help her, I was pretty helpless myself, but she’s getting better,” Chui said.
With Halloween that evening, Chui had planned to take his daughter trick-or-treating, but their plans were ruined.
“It’s just not making us sleep well, so we’re fairly traumatized,” he said.
Neighbors, outraged by the violence, gathered on the block to raise awareness. They voiced concerns over a rise in violent crime in the neighborhood and called for more police patrols to protect residents.
“We need to ramp up on security. This is happening too much. We had a young lady being killed down the street, one down the block. We’re sick of it,” a neighbor said.
At this time, no one is in custody, but a $6,000 reward is being offered for any information leading to an arrest.
