Freeze went 15-19 overall and 6-16 in SEC play during his tenure at Auburn, which started when he was hired as its head coach in November 2022. Though fans welcomed Freeze when he entered the Plains, he failed to meet expectations.
The Tigers won six games–including three in the SEC–in 2023 and lost to Maryland in the Music City Bowl. The program took a step backwards in 2024 when it won two conference games and did not achieve bowl eligibility.
The 2025 season started strong for Auburn, as it won its first three games and rose to No. 22 in the AP college football poll. Freeze, however, could not beat ranked SEC opponents. The Tigers lost to ranked Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Georgia and Missouri. They earned their first SEC win of 2025 against a struggling Arkansas program on Oct. 25.
Freeze’s last game leading the Tigers was against Kentucky on Saturday. The Wildcats, which had only defeated Toledo and Eastern Michigan in 2025 heading into the contest, downed the Tigers, 10-3, in Jordan-Hare Stadium.
With the Tigers 1-5 in SEC play and tough games remaining for them against Vanderbilt and Alabama, Freeze was sacked.
“I have informed Coach Freeze of my decision to make a change in leadership with the Auburn Football program,” Cohen said in a statement. “Coach Freeze is a man of integrity, and we are appreciative of his investment in Auburn and his relentless work over the last three years in bolstering our roster. Our expectations for Auburn Football are to annually compete for championships and the search for the next leader of Auburn Football begins immediately.”
Cohen announced that D.J. Durkin, who has been serving as the program’s defensive coordinator, is now Auburn’s interim head coach. Auburn is set to face No. 15 Vanderbilt in Nashville on Saturday.
