The footage shows officers rushing to the shooting scene near Ruth’s Chris – and eventually catching up with the suspect outside Sam’s Club. The fleeing suspect was stopped when he was struck by a Fresno Police vehicle.
Police say on Aug. 20 at around 5:30 p.m., a Fresno Police Officer was on an unrelated call in the area of the River Park shopping center when he heard gunshots coming from the Ruth’s Chris parking lot.
Police say security camera footage shows the suspect, 18-year-old George Ruiz, firing the gun at a passing vehicle. He then crossed the road and attempted to carjack a nearby vehicle on the opposite side of Blackstone Avenue.
Ruiz is then seen failing to carjack the vehicle; police say the victim of the attempted carjacking was able to drive away.
Police say the suspect continued running toward the Sam’s Club parking lot.
According to police, an officer in a marked patrol vehicle spotted Ruiz running. They say he was reaching for his pants’ waistband, where a gun was spotted. An officer drove toward Ruiz and struck him, causing him to drop the gun. Ruiz was then arrested by officers.
According to police, Ruiz was taken to the hospital for leg pain, treated, and released, and was booked into jail.
A loaded firearm was recovered at the scene. The victims targeted in the shooting were not injured.
