Fifth-generation family farm celebrates fall with 17th annual giant pumpkin drop

PLEASANT GROVE, Utah (ABC4) — One local, family-owned farm celebrates fall each year with its giant pumpkin drop, which raises money for charity.

Hee Haw Farms at Oliver’s Place has been an agritourism attraction for the past 25 years, but the farm been in the same family since 1870, when it was homesteaded by Oliver Smith. The farm now is much smaller than its original homestead, but fifth-generation owners Kyle and Chalise Smith are continuing the legacy.

Hee Haw Farms operates year-round, with spring, summer, fall, and winter events. Chalise Smith told ABC4 that fall is their most popular season, and the highlight is of course the giant pumpkin drop.

This is the 17th year of the giant pumpkin drop, and Charlise said that more than 10,000 pounds of pumpkins have been dropped onto different objects over the years. The giant pumpkins draw the attention, but they drop normal-sized pumpkins each year too.

The pumpkin drop celebrates the end of the harvest, and during the event, Hee Haw Farms raises money for a local family or individual facing hardship, to support them through hard times.

According to their website, they create activities for all ages to enjoy in an authentic farm environment. As Oliver’s Place, they also offer farm fresh food, like fresh eggs, sourdough bread, and local honey.

This is the last weekend for the fall event, but don’t worry–in December, you’ll be able to visit the farm for a Christmas hayride.
