Wrong way E-scooter rider dies after crash with car in North Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A woman died after being involved in a crash with a car while riding an e-scooter in North Portland last week, authorities said.

Portland resident Alicia M. Long, 41, died on the afternoon of October 23 at the hospital, the day after she was in the crash, Portland police said.

“On Wednesday, October 22, 2025 at 1:45 a.m., Portland Police officers assigned to North Precinct were on patrol, southbound on North Vancouver Avenue turning east on North Weidler Street, when they saw a Lime electric scooter rider proceeding on westbound Weidler Street against the one-way traffic. The officers saw the rider enter the intersection and collide with another vehicle that was southbound on North Vancouver Avenue,” the Portland Police Bureau said in a press release. “Officers immediately responded by requesting emergency medical services, aiding the injured rider, and securing the area by stopping traffic. Additional officers responded to assist as well.”

At first, it was believed by medical personnel that Long’s injuries were non-life-threatening after she was taken to the hospital by ambulance with serious injuries. However, a family member later told police that Long’s medical condition “had deteriorated and she was not expected to survive.”

Police said the investigation had determined she was riding the scooter westbound on North Wiedler Street, going the wrong way down a one-way street. A woman driving a 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC300 SUV had then entered the intersection from North Vancouver Avenue on a green light prior to striking Long, who wasn’t wearing a helmet.

The driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with the investigation on the day of the crash, police said.
