SF street goes all out with Halloween displays for decades-old tradition

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) –Every year on Halloween, there’s a street in San Francisco that goes all out with decorations.

Residents in the Cole Valley neighborhood said it’s been going on for more than 50 years.

It’s not hard to see how seriously the residents on Belvedere take Halloween with decorations on almost every house. KRON4’s Rob Nesbitt found out about it from an Instagram reel suggesting areas in San Francisco to take kids trick or treating and said it does not disappoint.

All day Friday, neighbors set up decorations and helped each other plan for the thousands of kids that come to trick or treat every year.

Residents said the Halloween tradition started in the 1970s when residents went to the police concerned over speeding cars. The street was closed off the next Halloween and every Halloween since.

Belvedere Resident Sian Davis said her realtor made sure she was aware about the tradition when she moved into the Cole Valley neighborhood three years ago.

“It was on the disclosure package when we bought the house,” said Davis.

It may be hard work to set up and a lot of pressure from neighbors to outdo each other, but when you have 5,000 smiling faces walking the block, it makes it all worth it.

There is also a band that sets up at the Parnassus Avenue side of Belvedere Street. Night visitors to the displays can see the projections people put on the side of their houses after dark.
