One of the potential jurors broke down crying, mostly it seemed because of fears for her own safety in the community and how that plays into her now being called for jury duty.
The potential juror lives two miles from Brooks Sandwich House.
She said she remembers when Scott Brooks was shot and killed outside his restaurant in December 2019.
She’s a single mom, and her tears started flowing when she talked about her own home being broken into twice in the neighborhood.
She and three other people were dismissed Friday morning during jury selection because they said they already formed an opinion in the case, either from their personal experiences or from the news coverage they had watched and read.
Friday was the first day that Scott’s twin brother, David Brooks, sat in on jury selection.
“They can see that our family’s been through a lot of pain in the last six years, and they start to notice that pain, and they see it when they turn on the television, when they hear an interview. And it’s just something that’s part of being a human and that’s part of bringing justice to a case like this,” said David Brooks.
On Friday, a potential juror who was called to the box was a no-show. The bailiff said he also didn’t come to court on Thursday.
The judge says he could now be facing a contempt charge.
Jury selection continues on Monday.
They still need five more jurors and four alternates.
The current makeup of the jurors who are already selected is one Hispanic man, one Hispanic woman, two white men, and three white women.
