PHOTOS: West Virginia’s first snow falls on Halloween

SNOWSHOE, W.Va. (WBOY) — West Virginia’s higher elevations, like Snowshoe Mountain, saw the first snow of the season overnight.

Snowshoe Mountain Resort said Friday that a dusting of snow fell early Halloween morning, marking the beginning of winter weather for the 2025-26 season.

“A little Halloween dusting was the perfect treat! It wasn’t much, but enough to get us excited for more,” the resort said on social media.

Other high-elevation places like Canaan Valley also saw snow late Thursday night.

Although it is not winter yet in the Mountain State, it is common for West Virginia–and especially its highest elevations–to see snow in October. Last year, places like Snowshoe saw the first notable snow in mid-October.

After starting off with snow in some areas, most of West Virginia is looking dry, though chilly, for the rest of Halloween. There is a possible stray shower late Friday, but our StormTracker 12 Weather team predicts mostly dry conditions for trick-or-treat and high school football.
