Philadelphians concerned as SNAP benefits are set to expire on November 1

PHILADELPHIA (WPHL) — SNAP benefits are expected to expire beginning November 1 amid the ongoing government shutdown, leaving many Philadelphians turning to local nonprofits for help.

In West Philadelphia, neighbors are hoping food shelves will be restocked at nonprofits like Mighty Writers.

“Supply is not keeping up with demand at this time,” Corinne Green, the executive director, told Action News at 10 on PHL17, “On average, we would serve about 50 families a day, and we’re seeing anywhere from 50-120 families a day.”

Officials estimate that roughly half a million Philadelphians may lose their benefits beginning November 1 if the shutdown continues.

The federal program, which has provided Americans with food assistance since 1964, has never been paused. Experts say the impact will be alarming.
