According to MDOT officials, a critical bridge repair project is underway on I-20 over the Big Black River. Six bridges total are being repaired, three in each direction.
Officials said hydro-demolition efforts on the eastbound bridges are complete. Crews are placing fiber-reinforced polymer wrap, repairing cracks, replacing bearing pads and preparing rebar for the eastbound bridge deck pours.
MDOT officials stated that recent accidents in and around the bridge repair work have resulted in major traffic delays, especially on the westbound side, where space is limited for crews to maneuver and clear the area after accidents occur. The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) will ramp up patrol efforts throughout the projects to help slow down traffic.
The $17.1 million project is expected to be completed in fall 2026.
Another project will reconstruct the I-20 Flowers interchange in Warren County. Officials said crews have completed paving ditches on the northwest side of the interchange and installed permanent concrete barriers.
After crews install curb and gutters, they will then begin paving the westbound acceleration lane shoulder, the roundabouts and detour road.
The $13.4 million project is expected to be completed in fall 2026.
