Lakeland Encourages Residents to Mulch Leaves for Healthier Lawns (Bagged Pickup Still Available)

As autumn arrives and leaves begin to fall throughout the city, Lakeland officials are reminding residents of environmentally friendly ways to manage leaf cleanup. While the city will not be offering leaf vacuuming services this year, bagged leaves will continue to be collected as usual. However, the city is encouraging homeowners to consider mulching or composting leaves instead of throwing them away.

In a recent seasonal update, the city highlighted how mulching leaves with a lawn mower—or having a landscaper mulch them on-site—can significantly benefit lawn and soil health. As leaves decompose, they naturally release valuable nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, along with additional minerals including calcium, magnesium, iron, and manganese. This breakdown process enriches the soil, improves moisture retention, and enhances drainage. The added organic matter supports stronger turf, healthier shrubs, and more resilient trees.

Mulching is especially recommended for residents with larger yard spaces (generally one-third of an acre or more), where leaf accumulation can be effectively worked back into the landscape. For smaller lawns or homeowners who prefer not to mulch, bagging remains a practical option. Many lawn service companies also offer mulching, bagging, and removal services upon request.

City officials noted that choosing to mulch when possible not only benefits individual lawns, but also reduces the amount of yard waste collected citywide—supporting a healthier, more sustainable environment for the entire community.
