NEW IBERIA, La. (
KLFY) — A Lafayette man will spend 30 years in prison after
trying to kill his then-girlfriend in Breaux Bridge, authorities said.
Alcolby Lasalle, 31, was sentenced Wednesday to 20 years at hard labor for attempted manslaughter and 10 years at hard labor for aggravated assault with a firearm in the 16th Judicial District Court.
Lasalle pleaded guilty to the counts July 28.
The incident occurred on Oct. 23, 2023, when Lasalle attempted to strangle his girlfriend in a parking lot in Breaux Bridge after she told him she was ready to go home. Lasalle also brandished a firearm at the victim, officials said.
When the victim fled Lasalle pursued her in a car and tried to run her over, the victim attempted to run behind a house. Lasalle continued to pursue her, hitting part of the house with the car, and then started shooting at the victim. Several of the shots hit the house, causing visible damage.
There were two people sleeping in the house when the defendant hit it with his car and started shooting at the victim.
The incident was captured on security video and was witnessed by an off-duty security guard who stopped in case the victim needed medical aid. Fortunately, the victim suffered only minor injuries.
Judge Roger P. Hamilton, Jr. handed down the sentence, which was the maximum allowed by law, prosecutors said. Hamilton ordered that the sentences run consecutively.
