INDIANAPOLIS — A national chain of auto shops is giving its locations a piece of local flair.

It started as a way to cover up graffiti and has turned into an award-winning initiative.

When driving throughout central Indiana, you’ll notice unique art in unexpected places, including 26 different Jiffy Lube locations.

Each mural is completely unrelated to anything automobile-centric, and there’s a reason for that: creative freedom.

The project started back in 2016, when the Broad Ripple Jiffy Lube location fell victim to graffiti. Instead of continuously covering it up, the chain had a better and more impactful idea. The company got in touch with the Indianapolis Arts Council and reached out to artists who wanted to have their work displayed for all to see.

“I think it’s great for the city because you know other big metropolitan cities…they do this kind of work and it’s, like, let’s decorate the city with some good art,” said Jiffy Lube District Manager Rodney Brown.

The project’s latest art installation, “Vibrant Fashionistas,” is located at 62nd and Keystone. The artist behind the artwork, William Ray, says it’s inspired by individualism.

“I hope they kind of recognize that it’s okay to be your own individual and have that human spirit and be creative and be yourself,” Ray said.

“They also provide something different to look at besides, you know, blank walls, and there’s a meaning of thought behind what artists do–just to kind of open people’s minds up a little bit to new ideas and new images.”

Along with the recognition, the artists are paid for their work.
