A 44-year-old former Minneapolis City Council member was charged with DWI earlier this week after crashing into a parked car and refusing to cooperate with law enforcement.

Alondra Espejel, also known as Alondra Cano, was charged on Thursday with one count of third-degree DWI for refusing to submit to a breath test and one count of fourth-degree DWI.

According to court records, Minneapolis officers were called to the 300 block of Fourth Street South on Tuesday night after it was reported that a woman had crashed into a parked car.

The driver of the vehicle that crashed, Espejel, refused to show her ID and tried to drive off, according to the criminal complaint.

Officers noted Espejel’s eyes were bloodshot and her speech was slurred. She had difficulty balancing and was unable to follow instructions during the field sobriety tests, the complaint stated.

Witnesses said Espejel was driving erratically before the crash, honking and speeding down the street, according to the complaint, which stated that she was seen pulling out from behind a line of cars and crashing into another vehicle.
