“That’s just the way of showing, we’re all in this together,” said Elsa Matthews, Co-owner of Comfort Foodies.
Comfort Foodies, known for its merged dishes of Southern classics and Caribbean cuisine, is offering $10 daily meal specials and letting kids eat free, Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. But the restaurant’s biggest impact is through its “Pay-It-Forward” meal program. A way for customers to buy a meal at half price for someone struggling to afford one during the government shutdown.
“No questions asked. Doesn’t matter who you are,” said Matthews.
The idea is simple but powerful. Each prepaid meal is printed on a special gift receipt and added to the restaurant’s “Wall of Hope.” Those who need a meal can tell the cashier and eat for free. No questions asked.
“My heart is truly broken for them. And we’re just trying to do whatever we can to help the situation,” said Matthews.
The kind gesture comes amid Congress’s inability to pass appropriations bills that fund the operations of federal agencies and programs. To end the shutdown, Congress must pass appropriations bills, and the President must sign them to fund the departments and agencies that have been shut down. The President can not end a shutdown unilaterally.
In the meantime, food banks are scrambling to help keep food on the tables of families that desperately need it, causing a demand for essentials that already outweighs the resources.
For Comfort Foodies, the specials will continue Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. until the shutdown ends. For families facing food insecurity, the restaurant offers more than a plate of food; it offers kindness, dignity, and a reminder that Houston still looks out for its own.
