Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has joined a coalition of attorneys general working to ban synthetic THC products.

In a letter calling for Congress to enact the ban, the coalition specifically called out products that use delta-8, delta-9, delta-10, THC-0, THCP and HHC. These products, according to the coalition, are infused with high concentrations meant to intoxicate users.

The coalition claims these “intoxicating hemp-derived” products are not what the initial 2018 Farm Bill intended to allow, and that the lack of regulation is contributing to an “industry that threatens public health and safety.”

Ellison is one of 39 state attorneys general now requesting Congress provide “proper interpretation” of the Farm Bill’s hemp provision, which would ban the aforementioned synthetic products from being placed in THC edibles and drinks.

The call for a ban comes as Minnesota’s cannabis and THC industry is exploding in popularity, and while some believe the letter shows attorneys general are trying to squash the industry, Ellison says it’s really the opposite.

In an online post on Wednesday, Ellison wrote, “I am and will remain a supporter of Minnesota’s THC edible industry that follows state law, supports businesses, farmers, and entrepreneurs across Minnesota, and creates products that people enjoy.”

He added that he isn’t trying to restrict the sale of THC-infused edibles and says Minnesota’s THC laws are “smart and safety-conscious.”

However, Ellison said the federal law doesn’t have any quality-control standards and other highly potent products are now making their way into Minnesota from other states.

“I want this industry to continue to grow and flourish. I also want products sold in Minnesota to be safe and follow our laws,” Ellison said. “I believe that closing the loophole in the 2018 Farm Bill will accomplish both of these goals.”
