Women says ex-boyfriend used hidden cameras to spread nude videos of her on Instagram

INDIANAPOLIS — A man with an alleged trove of spying equipment is accused of sending intimate videos of his ex-girlfriend to her friends on Instagram. These videos were reportedly filmed with hidden cameras while they were dating— without her knowledge.

Patrick Rubeck, 40, of Indianapolis was arrested on Monday on an outstanding warrant by Carmel police. Officers pulled Rubeck over just after midnight and allegedly discovered both cocaine and a firearm inside his BMW.

Rubeck is forbidden from carrying a firearm due to being charged with felony theft in 2003. He’d later plead to a lesser misdemeanor conversion charge. Rubeck’s ex also had an active protective order against him, which police said prevents him from carrying a handgun.

According to court documents, Rubeck’s former girlfriend contacted police in April after discovering an Instagram account pretending to be her was sending intimate videos and images to her friends.

The videos were allegedly recorded by hidden cameras Rubeck had set up in his home during the eight-month period the pair were dating. The woman told police she had not granted Rubeck permission to record, use or release this footage and had been unaware she’d been recorded during their intimate acts.

Rubeck is accused of messaging the videos to the woman’s friends on Instagram while claiming to be the victim. Investigators said Rubeck tried to cover his tracks by linking the Instagram account to an email using the victim’s name.

According to court documents, police traced the IP address used for the bogus account to a multi-unit condo where Rubeck lived. The woman also identified Rubeck in the videos and said they were taken in his bedroom.

In late May, police searched Rubeck’s home after a search warrant was approved. Rubeck was not home during the search and did not show despite being contacted by police.

According to court documents, investigators discovered a bag in Rubeck’s closet with a burner phone, door lock pick kit, a device made for listening through walls, night vision binoculars, a large knife, tire spikes, air tags, foot booties, fake police badges, a flashlight, military fatigues and a ballistic vest.

A manual was also found for a wall plug-in block for a hidden camera and a GoPro was found in the bathroom.

Court documents detail how police found a spot in the bedroom where they believe a hidden camera disguised as a smoke detector had been placed to secretly record the victim. They didn’t locate the device.

Investigators did find the digital files, however, stored on an iCloud account belonging to Rubeck, court documents reveal. These digital files contained the hidden recordings of the victim. Investigators noted that the victim “didn’t appear aware of the camera” during these recordings.

On the GoPro, investigators also found footage of another woman in just her bra and underwear cleaning Rubeck’s shower. Police noted it appeared Rubeck was trying to hide the camera during the recording of this footage.

Charges weren’t filed in this case until Oct. 16 when Rubeck was charged with multiple counts of voyeurism and invasion of privacy, including a Level 6 felony relating to sharing the images with others online.

Carmel police pulled Rubeck over on Monday, knowing he had an outstanding warrant related to these charges. This is when police also uncovered the cocaine and illegal possession of a firearm leading to additional felony charges against him.

Online records indicate that Rubeck is the owner of Btown Clean, a cleaning company that began in Bloomington. In a Herald Times article about Rubeck and his company, Rubeck said his company has serviced residential and commercial properties, along with gaining access to student living quarters through his cleaning business.
