This crash happened Oct. 8 in Center Point. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, an off-duty Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputy ran a red light and hit a car.
That car was driven by 22-year-old Kayla Williams. Her 15-year-old brother Nicholas Williams was in the back seat.
Last week, charges were announced against the deputy. Court documents show at the time of the crash she was under the influence of alcohol.
CBS 42 sat down with Amber Volmer, the mother of Kayla and Nicholas, and heard about how the crash has impacted their family.
“My kids could have been dead because of her foolish actions,” Volmer said. “My son had a small brain bleed. What if something else happens? He has to do physical therapy. Kayla is going to have to do physical therapy. It’s a lot.”
