Stewpot braces for more people in need amid government shutdown

JACKSON, Miss, (WJTV) – As Mississippi prepares for a pause in SNAP benefits in November, a Jackson nonprofit said it’s already seeing more people seeking help.

Stewpot Community Services operates many programs for the community, including a community kitchen and food pantry. Both are feeling the strain as families prepare for benefits to stop in November.

For many residents, the pause in SNAP benefits is already causing worry about how they will put food on the table.

“It is going to be difficult because they ain’t getting no, you know, food stamps no more. I know it will be hard for me,” said one resident.

Even if SNAP is restored soon, the effects are expected to linger.

“People who are experiencing food insecurity, or people who are financially insecure are going to feel the effects and experience the effects of the change, for weeks and maybe months to come. So, it’s not just a kind of a flash, and it’s over, but for people who are who need support, then it’s going to take a while to reach that new normal,” said Jill Barnes Buckley, executive director of Stewpot.

Stewpot is preparing to meet the growing need, stocking up on supplies and extending hours Monday through Thursday afternoons.

“We are available to people who need help getting food, you know, primarily through our community kitchen where you can get, you know, good lunch, every single day of the year. But also, you know, through help with groceries and depending on how long the crisis lasts,” said Buckley.

The nonprofit is also asking the community to step in through volunteering, donating food or making a financial contribution.
