Man assaulted by five fellow inmates at Tooele County Jail, documents say

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

TOOELE CITY, Utah (ABC4) — Five inmates in Tooele County are facing additional charges after allegedly assaulting another inmate, causing him to be airlifted for emergency surgery.

Gregory L Mall, Michael Shane Benton, Christopher Michael Bettcher, Alejandro Manuel Moore, and Quenten Lee Christensen are all facing a charge of assault by a prisoner. Mall and Moore are also facing one count of aggravated assault by a prisoner. No charges have been formally filed yet.

According to the arrest statements, on Oct. 23, 2025, a sheriff’s deputy began investigating an assault that took place at the Tooele County Detention Center. He reviewed camera footage from the unit where the assault happened.

In the footage, law enforcement reportedly saw Mall and Moore enter a cell with Bettcher. The two put a blanket over Bettcher’s head and threw “several punches at him.”

After Bettcher was assaulted, he and his two attackers walked out together and stood at the top of the stairs momentarily before suddenly running down the stairs and going into another cell.

Moore, Mall, and Bettcher join together for a reason not clarified in the documents. The three men entered the cell with Benton and the victim. Christensen followed behind and allegedly held the door shut while the four men began attacking the victim. Documents say that Moore and Mall “threw the bulk of punches at” the victim.

Following the assault, the five men exited the cell and left the victim behind. No information was available about why the victim was attacked.

The victim sustained “substantial injuries,” including a ruptured spleen that was deemed life-threatening. He was Life-Flighted and had to receive emergency surgery.

The five inmates — Moore, Mall, Bettcher, Benton, and Christensen — were already being held in the Tooele County Jail.
