According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Cruz, who lived in Hebron, was a semi-truck driver who was assisting a 56-year-old farmer alongside County Line Road around 5:31 p.m.
Authorities said the farmer’s grain cart chute made contact with overhead power lines, causing them to fall.
The coroner said Cruz attempted to help the farmer and was electrocuted when he touched the farmer’s John Deere tractor, which was in contact with the energized wires.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The farmer was taken to a Rockford hospital and was said to be in fair condition.
