California voters back Proposition 50, survey shows

(FOX40.COM) — A survey of California voters, done by Emerson College Polling, has found that Proposition 50 supporters outweigh those who oppose it.

The study found that 57% of voters support Prop 50, which would authorize temporary changes to the state Congressional maps, while 37% oppose it.

The organization said that the inclusion of undecided voters increases the support to 60% and the opposition to 40%.

“With less than two weeks until the California special election for Proposition 50, the measure looks likely to pass, with results again outside the poll’s margin of error,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said. “Certain demographic groups that were hesitant to support the measure last month have come around to support Prop. 50, such as Black voters, whose support increased from 45% to 71%.”

Meanwhile, the study showed that 56% of likely voters think the measure is a good idea, while 44% think it is a bad idea, regardless of how residents plan to vote.

Officials said that 89% of those planning to vote ‘yes’ think it is a good idea, with 11% thinking it is a bad idea. Around 93% of those planning to vote ‘no’ think it is a bad idea, while the remaining 7% think it is a good idea.

Among likely voters, Gov. Newsom holds a 48% job approval rating and 41% disapproval rating, while President Donald Trump holds a 37% job approval rating and 60% disapproval rating.

Emerson College Polling also studied the approval and disapproval rating for the candidates running for Governor of the state.

Republican Steve Hilton holds the top spot of most supporters at 16%, with Democrat Katie Porter following behind at 15%.

Republican Chad Bianco had an 11% voting rate with Democrats Xavier Becerra and Antonio Villaraigosa following at 5%.

The polling organization showed that 39% of voters remain undecided on who they support as the next governor of California.
