BELOIT, Wis (WTVO) — The Beloit Police and Fire Commission (PFC) has selected Schonella Stewart as the next City of Beloit Police Chief.

Stewart has served in law enforcement for 19 years with the Oak Park Police Department. She began her career as a police officer and has since risen through the ranks, according to the city. She currently holds the rank of Commander.

Stewart graduated in December 2023 from Northwestern University Staff and Command School, where she was awarded the prestigious Franklin M. Kreml Leadership Award for SPSC 561. Stewart is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP), and National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives (NAWLEE).

Candidates for Beloit Police Chief were required to complete two rounds of interviews with the PFC, take an assessment conducted by three police chiefs from other communities, participate in a community forum, and take an additional interview with the city leadership and department staff.

A formal approval by the PFC is expected in November.

Stewart beat out two other finalists, including Geneva, Wisconsin Police Chief Anthony Miceli and Ty Eagleson an assistant Deputy Chief in Rockford.

Stewart replaces former Beloit Police Chief Andre Sayles, who is now the Deputy Police Chief of Seattle, Washington.
