$74M Route 4 Bridge Project in Teaneck Set To Begin Fall 2026

The New Jersey Department of Transportation will pour $74 million into replacing the aging Route 4 bridge. Built in 1931, the structure needs a complete makeover to meet modern traffic demands. 

The upgraded span will stretch 504 feet and span 102.5 feet across, adding 24 feet of width to the current structure. State inspectors found the existing bridge falls short of today’s standards, rating it “structurally deficient and functionally obsolete,” as reported by NorthJersey.com.

Workers will tackle the job in three phases, each lasting nine months. Traffic will keep moving with two open lanes in each direction. The site sits at a busy spot near Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck High School, and where I-95 meets Route 4.

Plans call for new pavement, better water drainage, and stronger support walls. The site will get two water collection basins and security monitoring near Queen Anne Road. 

Short detours will affect Belle Avenue, Palisades Avenue, and Windsor Road during parts of the work. Pedestrians will need to use Sagamore Avenue in later phases. The CSX rail line underneath will stay active throughout construction.

The work will take over half an acre of park space and nearly as much wooded land. To make up for this loss, NJDOT plans to buy land on Shepard Avenue between Buffett Terrace and Oak Street. State environmental officials have signed off on these changes.

Construction is expected to begin in fall 2026, with the final phase wrapping up in spring 2032.
