Nance Ying, a Thailand native and owner of Chubby Baker, started by serving her desserts through pick-up orders at her mother-in-law’s house, she told Good Things Utah in 2022. She made the desserts to her own taste, and their popularity began to grow.
That small business bloomed into a real donut shop in Salt Lake City, which opened in October 2021. Two additional locations, one in Orem and one in Sandy, opened up soon after. Chubby Baker focused on specialty donuts and other unique dessert recipes.
On Sunday, Oct. 26, Ying announced that all three Chubby Baker locations will be closing shop on Nov. 9, 2025. She cited rising costs and expenses that have made it “increasingly difficult to sustain the business.”
Alongside financial concerns, Ying also noted that while she is a businesswoman, she “will always be a mom first.” She expressed that running a business takes time and energy that she wants to spend with her children.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for every visit, every kind word, and every bit of support along the way. You’ve made this journey so special, and I will forever be grateful for the love you’ve shown Chubby Baker,” Ying shared on Facebook.
For the last couple of weeks that Chubby Baker is open, the staff will be focused on serving donuts and cakes, but croffles and cinnamon rolls will be available while supplies last.
“Please come visit us before our final day to enjoy your favorite flavors one last time, and come support and show our team some love for the last time,” Ying said.
