WEST JORDAN, Utah (ABC4) — The parents and grandmother of an infant have been charged with the alleged aggravated abuse of a 2-week-old infant. Documents say that the child suffered 16 different injuries, including bruises and fractures.
Caydin Thomas Turner, 22, Leimoani Arryana Kauvaka Lemau, 25, and Ana Moani Lemau, 44, have each been charged with 16 counts of intentional or knowing aggravated child abuse, which is a first-degree felony.
According to court documents, a detective with the West Jordan Police Department responded to a hospital on a report of child abuse in June 2025. A 2-week-old infant allegedly had multiple injuries, including bruising on their face, fractures on their legs, and an “abnormality” on their anus.
The infant’s father, Turner, reported that when the child was born, they “experienced constipation” and that he would “put pressure down there” to help them complete bowel movements. Turner also allegedly told police that sometimes the infant’s “colon stuck out” and caused pain.
When Turner brought the child in for their two-week check-up, they were sent to the hospital so doctors could look at the bruises on their face and other health concerns. He said that he noticed the bruises on the infant’s face “a few days after” they were born, and wasn’t sure where they had come from.
The doctor who recommended that Turner take the infant to the hospital told police that she noticed bruises on the child’s cheekbone. When she questioned Turner and Leimoani Lemau, they claimed it was from scratching.
During the check-up, the doctor told them that babies are “not capable of causing bruising like that.” She later told police she found the bruising “weird and abnormal.” She also found the anal abnormality uncommon and instructed them to bring the infant to the emergency room.
While at the hospital, doctors found that the infant had fractures across their body. Turner denied knowing how his child received them but stated that he “could have done something in [his] sleep” or maybe the infant “could have done something.” He allegedly admitted to sometimes holding the infant up by the feet or knees while changing their diaper.
Documents say Turner admitted that maybe he “used too much force” or was “not being gentle, he was still learning, and maybe he grabbed too hard.”
The infant’s mother, Leimoani Lemau, told officers that she and her mother (the infant’s grandmother), Ana Lemau, take turns caring for the victim. Leimoani Lemau stated that the infant had a “rectal prolapse” and they would “put pressure” to help the child complete bowel movements.
When questioned regarding the bruising, Leimoani Lemau allegedly stated that the infant will sometimes “throw [themself] everywhere” and bruises easily. She called the child an “angry baby” and said that the child “hates being touched.”
Leimoani Lemau also told the detective that the fractures could have been caused while she was changing the infant’s diaper. She claimed that the baby is “fragile and kicks all over the place” and that they hold them by the ankles or feet to change their diaper.
The infant’s grandmother, Ana Lemau, was also questioned by police. She stated that the child was injured from “scratching” themself and that the child was “only a couple weeks old” and “fragile.”
According to documents, Ana Lemau described the bruises as being caused by “crying and scratching and that it was nothing serious.” She told police that the infant “gets mad when they change [their] diaper or when [they] want to be fed, so [the child] scratched [themself].”
During a later doctor appointment, the infant was found to have healing injuries and fractures to 12 of their ribs, as well as injuries to their arm and fractures in both legs. In total, the infant allegedly suffered 16 injuries at the hands of their family members.
Thomas, Leimoani Lemau, and Ana Lemau are not currently in custody, but will be summoned for upcoming court hearings.
