Police seek tips after two critically endangered tortoises stolen from Indianapolis Zoo

INDIANAPOLIS — The Capitol Police Section of the Indiana State Police is asking for the public’s help to find two tortoises stolen from the Indianapolis Zoo earlier this month.

Investigators said the theft occurred sometime between 10 a.m. Oct. 11 and 10 a.m. Oct. 12. The missing animals are an Egyptian tortoise and a Northern spider tortoise, both listed as critically endangered.

According to police, both tortoises are microchipped. The Egyptian tortoise also has a prominent scar on its underside.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Capitol Police at 317-234-2131 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS (8477). No additional details were immediately available, police said.
