Blake Treinen graduated from Osage City High School back in 2005. Now pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers, the 37-year-old pitcher is looking to win his third World Series in the last five years.
Holding a career sub 3.0 ERA, Treinen’s high school coach, Bryan Sage, says back in high school, he wasn’t the best player on the team. Although, his love for the game separated him from everyone else.
“He was a good kid. Loved to pitch, and that’s mainly what he did for me back in the day,” said Sage. “Just a kid that loved baseball and continued to follow his dream and never give up and take no as an answer.”
After taking a year off from baseball as a sophomore, Treinen returned to the diamond the following year. He would later become the 226th pick in the 2011 MLB draft, and make his big league debut in 2014. Sage says sometimes you have to pinch yourself to believe it.
“Once in awhile you just say ‘hey I do know that kid,’ and what’s really cool is that his mom and dad text us last night with a group of people, in a message, and it said, ‘Hey Go Dodgers,’ and they sent a picture of him behind home plate, and we just thought that was really special to be included on that and that he’s still thinking about us.” said Sage. “His parents still think about us and it’s just a great honor for myself and the community.”
If the Dodgers win the World Series, Treinen will become a part of history with the Dodgers winning back-to-back titles. The last time a team won two straight championships was in 2000 when the New York Yankees completed a three-peat.
