Mayor: South Point’s last bank to close permanently

SOUTH POINT, Ohio (WOWK) – The last bank in the Village of South Point is closing its doors for good, according to the town’s mayor.

South Point Mayor Jeff Gaskin announced that the WesBanco in town will be closing its doors. He says this closure is a reminder of how important it is to use our local services and patronize local businesses to keep them open.

In his Facebook post, the mayor reminded his community and others that if you don’t use it, you will lose it.

“What do we expect. Our paychecks and retirement checks are direct deposit. I can photograph a check with my phone to deposit it. I order clothes and pizza, and it’s connected to my credit card. I still do business with US Bank. On occasion, I need a check cashed, but usually only use the ATM. But… Walmart will give me cash back,” Gaskin said.

“It’s important to shop as local as we can, even if it’s a little more trouble, because we just might end up losing even more in our little village,” Gaskin said.

A spokesperson for WesBanco confirmed the closure to WOWK 13 News, also announcing that their Pea Ridge location in Cabell County, West Virginia, will be closing as well.

“Yes, we can confirm that we are closing our banking centers located in South Point, Ohio and Pea Ridge, West Virginia. These decisions were made as part of a broader optimization of our banking center network to better align our resources with evolving customer preferences, including increased digital banking usage.

We remain committed to serving our customers in the market and will continue to do so through nearby branch locations, our online and mobile banking platforms, and our customer service center.”
