PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man died at the Clackamas County Jail earlier this month after being assaulted by his cellmate, according to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.

According to officials, the incident was discovered around 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 18 when a deputy who was collecting meal trays saw the assault taking place inside a cell.

Deputies entered the cell and found that Reece Richeson was unconscious and unresponsive, officials said. He was promptly removed from the cell.

Richeson died at a local hospital three days after the assault.

The suspect, Sapastian Year, 23, had shared a cell with Richeson since Oct. 10. Year remains in custody.

“Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the assault. A standard review of jail policies and procedures will also occur,” CCSO said.

The case has been referred to the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office.
