IMPD: Man, woman arrested for confronting man with machete after disturbance

INDIANAPOLIS — Police have arrested two people who allegedly assaulted a man and woman with a machete following a disturbance that resulted in shots being fired on Indy’s east side.

Aggravated assault detectives with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Task Force arrested 20-year-old Oscar Goyes and 18-year-old Nataija Sledge following an investigation into a disturbance that left Sledge and two others injured.

Officers responded to the 1700 block of Portage Terrace on Oct. 18 to investigate a possible person shot run. IMPD initially reported that officers arrived on the scene and found Sledge suffering from a graze wound to her shoulder and a second wound on her side.

Detectives initially learned that Sledge and Goyes were involved in some type of altercation with a man who they claimed had hit their vehicle. IMPD noted that detectives quickly identified “some discrepancies” with these statements as they continued investigating.

Detectives later determined that the shooting actually occurred in the 2100 block of Wallace Avenue near Pogues Run Park, where they believe another driver hit Goyes and Sledge’s vehicle in the area.

IMPD said Goyes and Sledge followed the man back to a home on Wallace Avenue while armed with a machete. They confronted the man again and allegedly struck him and another female multiple times.

The victim later told detectives that he managed to escape and grabbed a firearm from his home. He recalled firing two rounds at the ground. IMPD said detectives believe Sledge sustained her injury from a ricochet during this incident.

Goyes and Sledge allegedly stole a shotgun from the victim’s residence before they fled the area. The pair was detained on Monday after the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office approved warrants for their arrest. IMPD confirmed that the alleged shooter in this case was not charged.

Goyes faces the following preliminary charges:

  • Battery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury (Level 5 Felony)
  • Theft of a Firearm (Level 5 Felony)
  • Battery by means of a deadly weapon (Level 5 Felony)
  • Tresspass (Class A Misdemeanor)
  • Invasion of Privacy (Class A Misdemeanor)
  • Criminal Mischief (Class A Misdemeanor)
  • Unlawful Entry of a Motor Vehicle (Class B Misdemeanor)

Meanwhile, Sledge has been preliminarily charged with the following:

  • Battery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury (Level 5 Felony)
  • Intimidation (Level 5 Felony)
  • Tresspass (Class A Misdemeanor)
  • Criminal Mischief (Class A Misdemeanor)
