Dozens of firefighters respond on near north side
According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched around 5:40 a.m. to the 2900 block of North Delaware Street. That’s near 30th and Meridian streets south of Meridian Park.
Video and images from the scene showed intense fire and heavy smoke in the area. Multiple units and firefighters responded.
The fire originated in an unoccupied two-story residence, according to IFD Battalion Chief Rita Reith. The fire spread to two nearby homes; the families inside those homes were able to safety evacuate.
While no one lived at the home where the fire started, someone was getting ready to move into the residence. The utilities were not switched on, according to IFD.
Reith said the fire was still not under control as of 6:40 a.m. While crews were putting water on the home, hot spots continued to reignite.
About 70 firefighters responded, and additional resources have been requested. Reith said one home located north of the building sustained significant damage.
No injuries were reported. IFD Victims Assistance was working the families to help them find shelter.
The cause remains under investigation.
