Athletics Director Scott Woodward said a national search for a permanent head coach would start immediately. In the meantime, New Orleans native Wilson will lead the Tigers.
Here are three facts to know about Wilson.
Wilson was already serving on the Tigers’ staff as associate head coach and running backs coach before being named interim head coach. Soon after Kelly was hired as head coach, he hired Wilson in December 2021. Before, Wilson served as running backs coach and recruiting coordinator from 2010-15.
According to his bio on LSU’s athletics department website, Wilson coached seven running backs at LSU who were later selected in the NFL Draft, including former Tigers star player Leonard Fournette. He is credited with coaching or recruiting 40 individuals who have played in the NFL.
Wilson served as head coach at McNeese State in Lake Charles during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. He previously worked on coaching staffs at several other collegiate programs, including Tennessee in 2009, Southern Miss in 2008, Ole Miss from 2005-07 and his alma mater Nicholls State in 1996.
