Suspect drifts into Portland police vehicle during 'dangerous' street takeover, officials say
Around 10 p.m. Friday, officers responded to reports of suspected street racing along North Columbia Boulevard.
On the scene, officers saw approximately 10 vehicles involved in an illegal street takeover.
According to the Portland Police Bureau, one driver, 30-year-old Daniel Miahalut of Portland, was detained and cited for reckless driving and unlawful street takeover.
Authorities said Miahalut’s vehicle was towed per city code, while the other vehicles dispersed after police intervention.
PPB responded to a second street takeover around 12:40 a.m. Sunday near the Moda Center and the Rose Quarter Transit Center.
Police said several vehicles were “performing dangerous stunts” while pedestrians ignited fireworks overhead, blocking all lanes of traffic and disrupting transit service.
With help from other precincts and the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, PPB dispersed the crowd.
During the operation, however, a suspect drifted around the intersection of Northeast Multnomah Street and Northeast Interstate Avenue and hit a patrol vehicle.
Authorities said the driver, 20-year-old Steven Servito of Kent, Washington, was arrested and lodged in the Multnomah County Detention Center on several charges, including two counts of assault of a police officer, reckless driving and two counts of reckless endangerment.
Two officers inside the patrol vehicle sustained minor injuries, PPB said, noting they were treated on scene by first responders.
Anyone with information about the street takeover events is asked to contact the Portland Police Bureau.
