Federal agents arrived at Carrington Square Apartments, at 181st and Stark, in search of two men. Witnesses said more than 10 vehicles were involved in the operation, and dozens of armed agents. Several people also reported helicopters hovering over the area, though it is unknown whether they were related to ICE’s activities. The Department of Homeland Security and ICE have not responded to questions. No arrests were announced.
Because of the operation, a portion of Southeast 182nd Avenue was closed. That made it too difficult to safely get students to school, prompting the sudden closure.
“We sincerely apologize for the late notice and inconvenience this has caused,” Rockwood Preparatory Academy wrote. “Our first priority is, and will always remain, the safety of our students and staff.”
“These are not normal times,” added Rep. Ricki Ruiz, D-Gresham. “When a school in the heart of Rockwood has to cancel classes without notice and a community is left in crisis, it’s clear these tactics are meant to create fear.”
