According to Gaston County court documents, Marquez Chrisshon Ray, 30, was arrested on Saturday, October 25, after allegedly driving while impaired and striking a parked patrol vehicle on the highway. Records state that the impact caused serious injuries to a law enforcement officer, who suffered facial lacerations, swelling, and bleeding before being taken to the hospital.
Ray has been charged with felony failure to move over resulting in serious injury or death, felony serious injury by vehicle, driving while impaired, reckless driving, and several traffic violations, including expired registration and failure to reduce speed.
Court records also state that officers found an open container of alcohol in Ray’s vehicle at the time of the crash. Ray was booked into the Gaston County jail on Saturday morning and released later that afternoon after posting a $50,000 secured bond.
Court records report that Ray was still impaired during his bond hearing over the weekend. He was scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday, October 27.
The case remains under investigation by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
