Fleeing motorcyclist suspected of shooting sheriff’s deputy crashes mid-pursuit

A fleeing motorcyclist suspected of shooting a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputy Monday afternoon crashed while being pursued by authorities.

Authorities were in pursuit on the eastbound 210 Freeway near Claremont when the motorcyclist hit the side of an uninvolved vehicle, flipped their bike and was ejected at high speeds.

The condition of the motorcyclist was not immediately clear, but video from Sky5 showed emergency responders rushing to the suspect’s aid and loading them into an emergency medical helicopter.

Authorities were in pursuit of the motorcyclist after a shooting Monday afternoon in which a sheriff’s deputy was wounded and later transported to a local hospital.

The shooting happened around 12:40 p.m. on 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive in Rancho Cucamonga. The condition of that deputy was not disclosed by Sheriff’s Department officials.

Around 1:22 p.m., authorities initiated a pursuit of the motorcyclist, who was traveling westbound at speeds exceeding 120 mph. They eventually exited the freeway and then re-entered traveling eastbound in the direction from where they were previously traveling.

At one point, the motorcyclist narrowly escaped a crash with a California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer that was involved in the chase.

Minutes later, the fleeing motorcyclist collided with the side of a black sedan that may have swerved in an attempt to stop them. The fleeing motorcyclist flipped over the front of the handlebars and landed on their back at speeds of around 70 mph.

Sky5 was overhead at the time of the crash.

Traffic was stopped in the immediate area of the crash as law enforcement moved in on the downed suspect. An emergency helicopter landed about 15 minutes later and the injured suspect was loaded inside and flown away from the scene to a nearby hospital.
