Weekend Weather: the calm after the storm

Summary: What a beautiful day in the big country despite the one severe storm that occurred during the afternoon in Mills county. Behind this weekends downpour conditions today look much better over then next few days. While temperatures will ramp up by Monday, a cold front arrives Tuesday that will change the outcome. Heading into the holiday weekend temperatures look to be below average.

October has been a record warm year when it comes to average mean temperature (to date 10/24) . The average mean temperature for October 2025 so far is 75.6°F this is a whole 2°F warmer than the warmest average we currently have on record, which so happens to be last year (2024) coming in at 73.6°F. It is also an impressive 7.3°F warmer than the average mean temperature (to date) of 68.3°F. Now, not getting ahead of ourselves because we do have a few days behind a series of cold fronts that will keep us closer if not below average to close out the month which will bring down the average mean temperature.  

This is all due to a blocking high pattern (omega block pattern) we couldn’t get out of until recently. Within the past 48 hours the Abilene regional airport saw 1.10″. For the month we have a total of 1.38″ while still below average for the month -0.85″, where usually to date we see 2.23″. Since the beginning of the year we have seen a total of 19.58″ still leaving us in the negative 2.40″, meaning that we are below the normal amount of precipitation we see year to date of 21.98″. There will likely be improvement to the drought monitor by next week with some counties already rescinding their burn ban.
