DRAPER, Utah (ABC4) — Multiple businesses at a Draper shopping center have been asked to either close or close their restrooms due to a sewer line blockage in the area, according to the Salt Lake County Health Department (SLCoHD).
At around 9 p.m. Friday night, SLCoHD crews responded to a sewage backup near 12200 South State Street that was entering a nearby storm drain. Crews from Jordan Basin Improvement District, which owns the sewer line, reportedly worked through the night to fix the problem but were unable to clear the line by this morning.
“Due to the amount of gravel and debris backing up in the sewer line, Jordan Basin believes the line is damaged (broken or collapsed), so repair could take several hours to days,” Salt Lake County officials said in a release.
Businesses in the Draper Peaks shopping center, located at 201 East 123000 South, have been asked to either temporarily close or close their restrooms due to the blockage. No homes are affected by the blockage.
“Because storm drains connect directly to our canals and natural waterways like the Jordan River, and this sewage problem is affecting storm drains, Salt Lake County Health Department has individually asked businesses that are connected to this specific sewer line to either temporarily cease operations or close their restrooms until the problem is repaired,” the release states. “SLCoHD has asked affected food service establishments to close because food service work requires hand washing and food operations result in larger amounts of wastewater than retail businesses. We thank the affected businesses for complying with our request and helping us protect our waterways during this incident.”
Here is a list of the affected businesses:
Food service (closed):
- Café Zupas (75 East 12150 South)
