Keeping it wet with a chance of thunderstorms around the PNW Sunday

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The KOIN 6 Weather Alert that was in place for the past two days, has now expired as the active weather around our region continued Saturday.

Saturday afternoon, PDX topped off at 41 mph for our peak wind gusts while max gusts in Astoria and Newport registered at 52 mph throughout Saturday afternoon.

But those high winds are expected to calm down on Sunday. The coast and valley though could still see breezy conditions at times.

The forecast is also still calling for pockets of heavy rain to linger into Sunday across the valley, which could lead to some minor urban flooding as rain totals will continue to add up across western Oregon and southwest Washington.

An isolated thunderstorm or two is still possible across Oregon and parts of southwest Washington on Sunday with lightning, small hail, and heavy downpours in the forecast as we wrap up this weekend.

Do be careful on the roadways. There have been plenty of downed tree limbs and debris found on the roads across the Portland metro area.

Weather alerts

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect now until 5 a.m. Monday morning for the southern Washington Cascades as well as the northern and central Oregon Cascades with heavy mountain snow falling above 3,500′.

Snow accumulation could be near a foot for mountain passes above 5,500′. From now until Monday, mountain pass travel is expected to be tricky, or even hazardous at times. Keep chains and an emergency kit in your car if you’ll be traveling up to the mountains over the next two days.

Stay with the KOIN 6 Weather Team for the latest on the forecast across the Pacific Northwest.
