Whirlpool plans to pour $300 million into its two Ohio laundry plants as part of a strategic commitment to grow its U.S. manufacturing footprint.

The investment in its Clyde and Marion, Ohio facilities will position the company for increased production of its next generation of washers and dryers, Whirlpool said.

The capital infusion is also expected to create between 400 and 600 new jobs.

“Whirlpool Corporation’s unwavering commitment to American manufacturing is a cornerstone of our identity,” said Chairman/CEO Marc Bitzer. “This $300 million investment in our Clyde and Marion facilities underscores our dedication to creating jobs, fostering innovation and delivering high-quality, American-made appliances to U.S. consumers.”

Whirlpool describes its Clyde facility, in operation since 1952, as the largest washing machine factory in the world. Its sister plant in Marion celebrated its 70th anniversary in September and currently produces up to 22,000 clothes dryers a day.

Approximately 80% of Whirlpool’s U.S. major appliance sales come from products produced in the company’s U.S. factories, the manufacturer said, while 96% of the steel used in its U.S. plants is sourced domestically.

“We are proud to reinforce our commitment to the communities and plants where generations have not only built appliances but careers, families and futures,” said Kristin Day, vice president of U.S. manufacturing. “This investment builds on that legacy, enhancing our manufacturing capabilities and ensuring we can continue producing world-class appliances right here in America.”

The latest investment adds to some $6 billion earmarked for U.S. R&D, capital expenditures and new product development over the past decade, and $23 billion in total spend on domestic operations, logistics and workforce. The company employs about 20,000 workers in the U.S., including over 14,000 at its 10 manufacturing plants.
