Woman drawn to a forgotten grave starts a Central Valley mission

FRESNO, Calif. (KGPE) – Connie Moncivais-Waldrop has dedicated herself to honoring an unknown individual buried in a Central Valley cemetery, transforming a forgotten grave into a place of remembrance.

After discovering the unmarked grave while visiting family, Moncivais-Waldrop felt a strong connection to the site, which had been neglected for years due to destroyed records from a fire in the early 1900s.

“He’s given me a friendship, somebody to talk to, and I do believe he does help answer my prayers,” Connie said of the unknown individual.

Lance Mauldin, who has been making headstones in Fresno for over 50 years, described her actions as a nice gesture.

“I think when someone kinda acknowledges that person more as a person than just an unknown.”

Connie Moncivais-Waldrop’s journey began in 2018 when she inquired about the grave while purchasing a plot for her brother-in-law. Despite the lack of records, she began leaving decorations and mementos at the site.

Her efforts culminated in the replacement of the grave marker, with the help of Lance Mauldin, who crafted a custom stone for the unknown friend.

On Aug. 25, Connia Moncivais-Waldrop’s birthday, family, friends, and co-workers gathered at the cemetery. Pastor Pat from the United Methodist Church led a prayer as the new stone was revealed, marking a moment of connection and remembrance.

“We’re here to love people and let them know they’re loved here and beyond,” Pastor Pat affirmed.

Connie Moncivais-Waldrop says her visits will continue, a reminder that no one should be unknown.

“Some people call me crazy, and some people say that’s the sweetest thing, and I’ve learned through the years that you can’t please everybody,” said Connie Moncivais-Waldrop. “But if I could please my own heart, my own conscience, my own, just to enjoy life and just to look at the positive things versus the negative things and I’m good.”
