ALAMEDA, Calif. (KRON) — A tense moment unfolded Friday afternoon after a rental vehicle drove through peaceful protesters gathered in front of Coast Guard Island and stopped several yards from the wall blocking vehicle access.

The incident happened around 3:15 p.m.

According to DMV records, the car is registered to Hertz.

KRON4’s Dan Kerman reported that as the vehicle approached the wall, Coast Guard members stationed above were “seen firing what appeared to be pepper balls (non-lethal) into the ground.”

The driver stopped, got out, and briefly spoke with the Guard members before getting back in the car, turning around, and leaving.

Protesters could be heard shouting “don’t shoot” and reportedly berated the driver for driving onto the property.

The incident occurred the day after Coast Guard officers shot the driver of a U-Haul that was backing toward the barricade, which had been the scene of a day-long protest Thursday. The driver and a bystander were struck in that incident.

KRON4 News has reached out to the Coast Guard for comment.
