CHARLOTTE, N.C. (
QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Two people are dead following two shootings connected to a kidnapping in Charlotte on Thursday, including one killed by police officers.
According to Medic, the initial shootings occurred around 4:15 p.m. near the intersection of North Hoskins Road and Brookshire in northwest Charlotte. Both victims were transported to the hospital, with one succumbing to his injuries and the other in critical condition, police said.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings later described how officers located the suspect from the shooting and began a chase. He was accused of forcing his way into a nearby home, kidnapping a victim, and leaving in the stolen vehicle with her.
As this occurred, the suspect was allegedly firing shots at the officers’ vehicles, and eventually crashed near the busy intersection of Freedom Drive and Morehead Street, just west of uptown, 3 1/2 miles away.
After a brief foot chase that included more reported shots fired at officers, several officers returned fire, striking and killing him. CMPD said the kidnapping suspect escaped without injury, and no officers were injured at the scene.
The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the officer-involved shooting, and CMPD is investigating the initial homicide, assault, and kidnapping.
The intersection of Morehead and Freedom was closed for hours on Thursday. Four officers were sent to the hospital to be evaluated as a precautionary measure.
Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Homicide Unit, Charlotte Fire Department, Medic, and Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene.
