A Delta Air Lines flight from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport bound for Portland, Oregon, stopped mid-takeoff on Thursday due to a “mechanical issue,” the airline said.
Delta Flight 1661 was set to take off at 4 p.m. Thursday, but the hiccup forced the crew and 180 ticketed passengers to switch to a different aircraft, resulting in a two-hour delay, a Delta spokesperson said.
“We apologize to our customers for their delay in travel,” the airline said.
Air traffic control audio obtained by ABC News via Live ATC captures the pilot saying takeoff was aborted because of a “right engine failure.” The air traffic controller said a “pop” was audible from the tower while the plane was taking off and ground crews were picking up “a ton of debris” left behind.
Delta said all passengers deplaned normally and the plane “taxied to the gate under its own power.”
