Kansas SNAP benefits at risk; food banks preparing

KANSAS (KSNT) – Food banks in Kansas are preparing for increased demand and calling for more volunteers as the government shutdown threatens Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

The Kansas Department for Children and Families announced on Thursday, Oct. 23 that nearly 188,000 Kansans may lose SNAP benefits in November if a federal spending bill isn’t passed by Oct. 28. We spoke to local food pantries Just Food and Harvesters to see what challenges the groups are facing.

“With this, we’re going to see an uptick in individuals who are going to need these services, so we’ll have more people coming in,” said Executive Director for Just Food Aundrea Walker. “We’ll probably also need more individuals for volunteering. We will continue to fight together to be able to make sure that everyone has a meal on their table.”

Harvesters oversees more than 500 food banks in Kansas. The organization said it will be a challenge to deal with the increased demand.

“When you have more people turning to our agencies, to our network, then that really impacts the inventory that we have available to folks,” said Chief Resource Officer at Harvesters Elizabeth Keever. “So, we’re really focused right now on making sure that we’re bolstering capacity at agencies who we know are going to feel this the most.”

Both organizations are asking for volunteers and donations to help meet the growing need.

“It takes all Kansans to solve this problem right now, so if you’re in need of assistance, don’t be afraid to ask for help and if you have the means please donate your time your money your voice and really speak up for those who are facing food insecurity,” Keever said.
