Hybrid blockchain project GoBob.xyz aims to bridge Bitcoin and Ethereum for decentralized finance
Developers in the Bitcoin ecosystem use .xyz domains to create innovative infrastructure and expand decentralized finance. Bitcoin mining initiative Proto.xyz develops modular hardware and open-source management software. Web3 platform Omega.xyz aims to pioneer Bitcoin DeFi with cross-chain yield generation solutions. Modular blockchain network Hemi.xyz seeks to unite Bitcoin and Ethereum networks in a scalable supernetwork. In this week’s #BlockchainThursday, we’ll introduce you to a hybrid Layer 2 project combining Bitcoin security with Ethereum’s DeFi innovation: GoBob.xyz.
GoBob.xyz is the online home of BOB (Build on Bitcoin), a hybrid Layer 2 blockchain developed to connect Bitcoin’s security with Ethereum’s decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem. According to its documentation, BOB is designed to make Bitcoin more usable within DeFi by enabling features such as simple, one-click Bitcoin staking (earning yield on Bitcoin holdings), cross-chain BTC swaps (exchanging Bitcoin across different networks), and access to Ethereum-compatible decentralized applications. It functions as an optimistic rollup, a scaling solution that processes transactions off-chain before finalizing them on Ethereum. The network also incorporates zero-knowledge proofs and is secured by billions of dollars in staked Bitcoin. BOB is developed by Distributed Crafts, a company focused on open-source blockchain research and infrastructure. In August 2025, BOB announced a $9.5M funding round led by Castle Island Ventures with participation from Ledger, RockawayX, IOSG Ventures, Bankless Ventures, Anchorage, Amber Group, and Sats Ventures, bringing its total funding to $21M.1
BOB positions itself as a gateway for Bitcoin DeFi. While Ethereum supports a large share of the current DeFi market, Bitcoin’s use in the sector remains limited. BOB aims to change that by providing a platform where Bitcoin can be used directly within DeFi applications without depending on wrapped tokens (tokenized versions of Bitcoin on other networks) or centralized intermediaries. The project describes its hybrid chain architecture as one that connects the security of the Bitcoin network with the flexibility of Ethereum’s programmable layer. BOB has already been integrated by DeFi and infrastructure projects such as Solv, Xverse, Pell, and Sovryn, with additional integrations expected as its ecosystem expands.
BOB was co-founded by Alexei Zamyatin, PhD, and Dominik Harz, PhD, who also lead Distributed Crafts. Alexei is the CEO of Distributed Crafts and has previously served as an Expert Advisor in Digital Assets and Web3 Governance for Boston Consulting Group. His background includes research in Bitcoin security and layer-2 scalability. Dominik serves as the CTO of Distributed Crafts and has contributed to research and development in blockchain interoperability. He is also a co-founder of Interlay, a decentralized bridge designed to connect Bitcoin with other blockchains. Together, Alexei and Dominik have focused on improving Bitcoin’s interoperability and bringing its liquidity into the broader decentralized ecosystem.
BOB uses GoBob.xyz as its official website. The short and direct domain aligns with the project’s branding and is easy to remember, making it effective for both users and developers seeking information about Bitcoin-based DeFi. The choice of .xyz places BOB within a community of blockchain and web3 innovators who use .xyz to establish modern and memorable online identities. You can learn more by following the project on X/Twitter, joining the Discord, and by visiting GoBob.xyz.
