WACO, Texas (FOX 44) – A former Waco Police officer has been indicted by a McLennan County Grand Jury for Tampering with Physical Evidence.

The Waco Police Department says it is “deply disturbed” by the actions of 24-year-old Rene Martinez, and that his actions do not reflect the integrity, values, ethical standards, and high expectations the agency strives to uphold and expects of all its employees.

An internal investigation into the allegations of misconduct began on July 26, 2025. Martinez was placed on administrative leave with pay.

The department says a criminal investigation commenced on August 1, 2025, following notification to leadership of potential criminal violations identified during a prior investigation conducted by Martinez.

While the department responded to a call for service at the Waco Regional Airport in April 2025, it was determined Martinez recovered a weapon but neglected to log, document, or store the gun properly. During the criminal investigation, it was determined Martinez did not transfer the firearm to the Waco Police Department’s Property Room.

The details of the investigation were presented to the Grand Jury, and Martinez was ultimately indicted for Tampering with Physical Evidence. It was also determined that Martinez violated department policy and falsified a government document by failing to recover, document, or properly dispose of evidence. The investigation also uncovered that Martinez violated the department’s body-worn camera policy.

Martinez resigned from the Waco Police Department on August 28 amid ongoing criminal and
internal investigations. The investigations continued after his resignation. Based on the evidence
gathered and the subsequent indictment, the department determined his conduct rose to a level which would have resulted in termination had he remained employed.

Waco Police Chief Sheryl D. Victorian said:

“This type of behavior is unacceptable and will never be tolerated within the Waco Police Department. It is not a reflection of our profession, nor of the dedicated men and women who serve this community with honor and integrity each day. I am proud that members of our team were vigilant, took notice, and brought their concerns to their supervisors. Their actions reinforce the culture of accountability and professionalism that we are committed to maintaining.”
