According to a statement from United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA), the incident happened during the morning stages of the Race Gun Nationals competition on Thursday, October 23. Luckily, no one else was injured.
First aid was quickly rendered to the competitor by USPSA Range Officers, staff, and volunteers, and they were transported to a local hospital. The competitor was treated for their injuries, and they have since been released.
Reportedly, all established range and safety procedures were in place and were being followed when the accidental discharge happened. It was a true accident.
“The swift and professional response from our staff and volunteers ensured the best possible outcome in an unfortunate situation. USPSA will remain in contact with the competitor throughout his recovery,” the statement concluded.
The Race Gun Nationals are being held in Hurricane from October 24 to 26 at Southern Utah Practical Shooting. October 22 and 23 were the pre-match rounds. The competition will proceed as planned.
